Nice thick rack. Congrats to Ted. Doug I recall you saying something on an earlier post about the SE elk being from Manitoba and slightly smaller than the western rocky mountain elk. Pretty nice for the smaller cousin!

Default Manitoban Elk

That is a monster. Those new farm land tags are something special. I believe the Manitoban Elk is actually bigger than the Rocky Mountain.

Here is a link to some info:

Manitoba elk has a larger body and a slightly smaller rack than the rocky mountain species according to my book. (Elk of Noth America Ecology and Management published by Wildlife Management Institute) I passed on this elk on opening morning. I did not have the heart to tag out in the first 15 minutes of opening morning. I was actually hunting one that was even better than this. The last time I saw the one I was after was on the 3rd last day of the season so I think he is still around.Teds elk is an old bull with great mass. He was starting to be passed his prime. He had one massive body.

Thanks for info, Doug. I was searching around to see if I could find answer, but nothing definitive. Interesting to read about the sub species of elk, though.

I have been an elk nut for years. A couple of friends of mine got me into them in the 70's in Moose Mountain Park. We would go there each fall and call and take pictures. For the last 8 or 10 years the popultion spread East and we have had a lot of fun with them closer to home. I am almost sad now that we have a season during the rut. It has brought an end to all that. I have read just about everything I could find on elk, but nothing could beat the education we would get each fall when they start to call. That big fellow is still waiting Randy.

I tried not to drool when you mentioned you passed Ted's Elk on the first day and chased a bigger one. I'll be there next fall, God willing and the cricks dont rise!
